Long, narrow gardens
The Chaparral project pages make the same observation three times: gardens here are often long and narrow, which suits a pool placed along the length of the plot. That is why three such different sizes work on the same kind of garden — a 5×2 m plunge pool of about 10 m² of water, a 6×3 m ceramic-finished pool of about 18 m² and an 8×4 m family pool of about 32 m², where you can swim a few strokes, float comfortably and still keep a sunbathing area. The 8×4 m is the bracket most requested by permanent residents rather than holiday owners.
Pool, terrace, shade and light as one job
The largest El Chaparral project is a flat plot where the pool, the terrace, the shade and the lighting were done together so that levels and drainage work with each other. Four decisions in it are worth copying:
- A generous terrace on the long side, which is where furniture actually goes, in a pale porcelain that stays cool underfoot.
- Wall washers in the boundary wall light the water at night without lighting the neighbours.
- A bioclimatic aluminium pergola with adjustable louvres. The project page notes it costs more than timber, survives coastal winters without maintenance and can be closed against rain.
- A slatted cover on a roller keeps heat in and leaves out; on a pool of this size the project page says it pays for itself in heating and cleaning within a couple of seasons.

Permits in Torrevieja
El Chaparral is in Torrevieja, so permits and tax come from the Ayuntamiento de Torrevieja. A renovation without structural work goes by a declaración responsable; structural work needs a certificate from an architect or engineer; a new house needs a full licence; and the construction tax ICIO is 4% of the cost of the works.
